    Abstract

Euchre is a card game dating back to the mid 19th century in the United States that continues to be played with great gusto throughout the Midwest. The basic rules of the game are well known, but the informal traditions that surround the game are both creative and extensive. Hand gestures, jargon, ritualized taunts and chants, and variations of play ensure that euchre is more than simply a card game. Further, its players are as varied as the traditions of the game. Seniors in retirement homes, college students in dorm rooms and family members around the kitchen table all play euchre, making the card game a tradition that unifies people of all ages.
