Abstract
On her debut Navona release, John Cage: Sonatas and Interludes / In A Landscape , pianist Kate Boyd performs two pieces exemplifying Cages compositionally intuitive and inventive range. One of his most substantial works, Sonatas and Interludes makes use of prepared piano, a Cage conception. A melding of Baroque form, contemporary technique, Eastern philosophy and Western musical styles, its every performance is unique due to each instruments preparation. Influenced by Satie, In a Landscape predates yet anticipates minimalism with its light, ethereal, and recurring themes.
