Abstract
"Spider Baby" was commissioned for the 1996 Calderfest (honoring Alexander Calder) and premiered by the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Calder loved collage and spiders. "Spider Baby" is a 'collage' piece that musically depicts the chaos of Alexander Calder's studio. After the 'theatre' @ 9:00 - 9:20 (spiders on stage), lights gradually fade, solo tenor sax player (wearing sunglasses) stands and plays his line, the brass section (also wearing sunglasses) light up and smoke cigarettes (where permitted by law ;) ... with the passing references to 1950's coffeehouse beatniks, an alternative title might be "Spider, Baby" .... bis bis
